The luckiest candidate?
During the 1997 and 1992 Dáil elections, no candidate was elected without having
polled at least 30% of the quota on the first count. Also, no successful candidate
started from a position more than 2 places from the last available seat. The situation
in the 1998 Northern Assembly election was quite different. No less than 4 candidates
were elected despite having less than 30% of the quota on the first count. The most
spectacular of these was UUP candidate George Savage in Upper Bann, who won a seat
despite polling less than 10% of the quota. In the 6-seat constituency, he was elected
even though he only started in 12th place.
