University Seats 2002
The Seanad elections for 2002 have just ended. Graduates of the two
oldest universities in the state, Dublin University (Trinity College)
and the National University of Ireland (UCD, UCC, UCG and Maynooth)
elect 6 senators. 3 are elected by the graduates of each university.
Of the remaining 54 seats, 43 are elected indirectly by County
Councillors, TDs and outgoing Senators and the remaining 11 are nominated
by the Taoiseach.
The 6 university seats were all retained by the outgoing senators.
University senators are traditionally independent, although
Brendan Ryan, who was re-elected for the NUI, was an unsuccessful
candidate for the Labour Party in Cork South-Central in the recent
general election.

candidate's vote percentage through the counts
4 the colours used do not represent party affiliation -
they are chosen purely for effect.
It is questionable how long the rather elitist practice of allowing
the graduates of Trinity and the NUI to elect 6 people to the Seanad
can continue. It does not seem right to give more influence in the
Oireachtas to what is already the most influential sector of society.
One might as well auction the seats off to the
highest bidder. There has been some talk of reform of late - perhaps this
will be the last occurrence of these rather feudal elections.
