About
This site
This site contains the results of the most important recent elections in Ireland. The site has been tested on Internet Explorer 4.0 and Netscape Communicator 4.5.

Using the site
The election viewer is quite simple to use:
  • candidates are displayed in first-preference vote sequence and in the colour of the party to which they belong
  • transferred votes received by a candidate are displayed in the colour of their immediate source. Where transfers have come from more than one source, they are displayed in white
  • votes transferred from a candidate are displayed in grey
  • the buttons enable you to return to the first count, advance to the next count or jump to the last count
  • when a candidate is deemed elected, their name is displayed in bold
  • moving the mouse over a candidate's name displays more information about the candidate
  • the white line represents the quota
  • use the box on the right to display more statistics

  • The electoral system
The single-transferable-vote is the electoral system used in all elections in the Republic of Ireland and in most elections in Northern Ireland. Elsewhere, it is used in Malta, parts of Australia and in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The single-transferable-vote offers voters more choice than almost any other system, and the transfers of votes between candidates reveals much more about actual voter preferences.
